Professionals working in care jobs may come across parents who find it difficult to communicate with their teenage children, but one expert has shared some advice.

Rosalie Ajzensztejn, team manager at Parentline Plus, said it is vital to listen to youngsters, even if the adult is not happy about what is being said.

Composing a text message may be an effective tool in establishing a conversation - especially if the young adult is among friends and may be embarrassed about receiving a phone call from their mother.

But despite the popularity of social networking websites and mobiles, Ms Ajzensztejn claims writing a letter can be a useful way to reach out to a troubled teen.

"It's a way of explaining that you do care ... and [saying] I worry if I think that you're in a situation where you're out of your depth," she added.

Supernanny suggests introducing topics of conversation about your views on drugs, relationships or sex to help teenagers develop emotionally.
