Will green jobs be involved in the creation of the smart grid?

The development of smart grid systems for electric cars in the UK could generate green jobs and make the technology cost-effective.

That is according to Matthew Knight, business development manager of Siemens Energy, who suggested that developing a 'smart' infrastructure for green vehicles will require Europe-wide cooperation.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change published a report on the potential of smart grids last December, claiming that the use of ICT technology to the electricity system will deliver energy more efficiently and more reliably.

Mr Knight explained that these grids will allow European consumers to make better use of current electricity network.

He said: "The idea of making your grid smarter allows you to balance generation and demand, giving people pricing signals to switch their washing machine on and off, or to charge up their electric car when the price of electricity is cheap."

Last month, Julian Groues, vice president of EMEA sales for Oracle Utilities, urged governments to invest in smart grids alongside the development of electric cars.
