Thousands of housing jobs safeguarded via new funding

The government has unveiled its plans to protect thousands of housing jobs in the UK during the remainder of the economic downturn.

Housing minister John Healey announced that £263 million will be allocated to build affordable homes and kick-start developments stalled by the recession.

This investment is predicted to generate and safeguard around 88,000 housing jobs in total, with a further 3,000 apprenticeships expected to be available throughout the UK.

The money will also be used to construct 4,300 new homes and adds to the "vital" public funds allocated to the ailing industry over the past two years.

Mr Healey described the government's actions as "unprecedented" and believes that it will strengthen the country's recovery from the recession.

He said: "This public investment has been a vital boost to jobs and house building during the recession and it's equally important to economic growth in the future."

Mr Healey, who was appointed housing minister in June 2009, is responsible for the UK's housing, planning and sustainable development.
