Those in regeneration jobs 'to support local authorities with garden building'
Those in regeneration jobs may be asked to work with local authorities experiencing problems with inappropriate building on back gardens.
The minister for housing and planning, John Healey, published guidelines yesterday (January 19th) explaining that while less than half of the nation's councils considered this an issue, an overwhelming majority of those who did had no plans in place to stop it.
As a solution, he has now asked chief planning officer Steve Quartermain to write to those in regeneration jobs to work with troubled local authorities to explain existing regulations they can access that could stop the problem.
"If those areas that have reported a problem don't want to see developments on garden land, they are tying their own hands by not having a local plan in place," Mr Healey added.
He noted that 'garden grabbing' can affect the scenery of local communities.
The letter Mr Quartermain has written notes that local authorities are best able to support planning developments in their own catchment areas - but may need the help of those in regeneration jobs to do so.
