Those in care jobs ''need effective training''-Care jobs News 22 Jun 2010

People working in care jobs that come into contact with disabled people need effective training to be able to operate properly.

That is according to Leonard Cheshire's Disability public policy manager Guy Parckar, who said: "Clearly action is needed across the sector to ensure [that] staff are properly trained, and [that] systems [are] in place to respond to disabled people's needs."

His comments come in response to a survey compiled by Mencap which found that health care professionals such as doctors and nurses believe some patients with learning disabilities receive inferior levels of care.

A total of 45 per cent of doctors asked claim they have witnessed neglect and lack of dignity in such cases.

Mr Parckar pointed out that the report raises "serious concerns in the medical profession" and that the issues should be addressed.

The survey also states that staff must ensure everyone regardless of their physical or mental ability have equal access to healthcare services.
