Supergrid ''will increase popularity of green energy''-Environmental Careers News
04 Feb 2010
The new European supergrid will create more green jobs and drive down dependency on fossil fuels, it has been suggested.
Paolo Berrino, press officer at the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), spoke out after plans for several countries on the continent - including Germany, France and the Netherlands - to merge their electricity grids with the UK's to create one large infrastructure were announced.
Mr Berrino referenced some EWEA statistics which showed that out of all alternative energy projects in the EU in 2009, wind power was the biggest.
He said that the supergrid would help the EU to exploit both offshore and onshore wind energy while reducing electricity prices and increasing trade between the countries.
Mr Berrino added that the grid would have to be expanded in order to realise the full potential of wind power.
"More electricity grids need to be built to allow national electricity markets to be merged, which would improve low liquidity in intraday markets particularly on a cross-border level," he added.
