Solar power could support environmental careers

Those interested in pursuing environmental careers may be intrigued by the comments of an expert, who suggested that solar thermal generation could be a massive industry in the future.

Alfons Benzinger, energy sector press officer for Siemens, discussed the variety of alternative sources that could end up powering the world over the coming years.

Regarding his company's strategy, he said: "We have the technology to create the power in the desert. I think that it is possible … We are also thinking about providing this clean power to Europe."

Such projects could gain greater financial support as the technology improves, Mr Benzinger hinted.

According to New Scientist, there are a number of challenges that solar projects need to overcome.

For instance, the Sahara and North African deserts are not capable of providing large amounts of water, which thermal technology relies on.

Even so, it found that such techniques are much cheaper than the photoelectric panel alternative.
