Social networking could be more important than the telephone for media jobs

The importance of social networking for those employed in media jobs has again been emphasised as one expert believes online communication is now more prevalent than telephone use.

That's the view of Daniel Chubb, chief executive officer at social media news website Online Social Media, who says some internet age groups are now using Facebook or Twitter more times per day than they will use the phone.

"It is not like this for everyone, but the younger generation certainly cannot live without social media and using Facebook to chat to friends and game together," he said.

He also pointed out that while a few sites dominate the market, there are many other networks which target niche markets and have their own loyal following.

A report out this week by Insites Consulting suggests 72 per cent of internet users are part of a social networking site, amounting to a worldwide total of 940 million people.

Figures show Facebook to be the dominant presence in the market with 51 per cent of all those online using the site, while 20 per cent had MySpace accounts and 17 per cent were registered with Twitter.
