Scotland to be home of world-first renewable energy scheme?

Scotland could be the home of an innovative new renewable energy development in the near future, it has been revealed.

First minister of the country, Alex Salmond, yesterday (August 16th) opened talks with Statoil, a Norwegian-based oil company, over the possibility of creating the world's first floating wind farm in Scotland.

The Scandinavian firm has already built a prototype Hywind unit that provides power to an area of Norway and has now identified two potential sites - off the coast at Lewis and near Aberdeenshire - for a floating wind farm in Scottish waters.

And Mr Salmond said that between three and five of these specialist units may now be constructed in order for the government to analyse how commercially successful such a development would prove in the UK.

The two parties will meet again next month for further discussions following initial talks which the minister described as "very positive".

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the renewableenergycentre.co.uk commented recently that the UK may struggle to meet its target of reducing carbon emissions by 20 per cent over the next ten years.
