Route into arts and media jobs for those with entrepreneurial flair

The doors are still wide open for those with an entrepreneurial spirit to work in media and arts jobs, according to one industry professional.

A lack of formal vocational qualifications has been highlighted as a problem in research by Skillset, but Music Ally chief executive Paul Brindley said this has created opportunities for creative individuals.

"There's simply no excuse not to show what you can do yourself when the opportunities are so great," he added.

He stressed the challenge organisations such as Skillset faced was difficult, as they seek to match training and qualifications to a fast-moving industry.

The initial research, published last week, suggests job opportunities in the creative industries will increase rapidly as the sector is predicted to expand at twice the rate of the rest of the economy.

One in two media companies reported a skills shortage coming out of the recession, with oversupply in the number of graduates holding general media degrees and a shortage of those with the specific skills employers seek.
