Retailers in green jobs must provide transparent information

Shopkeepers working in green jobs should provide clear information to help consumers make environmentally-sound choices, one expert has said.

Will Hodson, from Ethical Consumer Magazine, said "glossy adverts" can be misleading but customers should be provided with details of emissions and comparisons with other firms to back up such claims.

"It's crucial for customers to be able to act [in an ethical way], but they should see their actions in a broader context," he added.

Politically-motivated schemes should also be more transparent, according to Mr Hodson. Anything initiated by the government should be marketed as such and these actions should be encouraged.

Comparison website Kelkoo predicted a rise in revenue from eco products by 2015 and these purchases have increased by 451 per cent since 2000.

However, the lack of advice printed on products such as baby wipes and nappies were said to be insufficient in an article by Which? Magazine.
