Those working in charity jobs have been encouraging others to register as an organ donor with a view to helping people with kidney disease.
Charles Kernahan, chief executive of Kidney Research UK, said: "90 per cent of the patients on the active waiting list for an organ transplant are actually waiting for a kidney."
Families should discuss the issue and agree whether they or their relatives wish to become a donor after their death, he continued.
National Transplant Week has been arranged to raise awareness of organ donation and the "great gift of life it can bring".
Mr Kernahan went on to say that one suitable donor can help two sufferers of kidney disease and that the more the issues are discussed, the more people are likely to benefit.
His comments come in response to information from NHS Blood and Transplant which stated just 28 per cent of UK residents are on the NHS Organ Donor Register.
