Online copyright debate could impact on those in media jobs

The future of online copyright is being is being debated in parliament and could impact upon workers in arts and media jobs.

As the government seeks to tighten up the legislation on copyright theft through the internet - in areas such as illegal downloading of music and films - one MP has warned the digital economy bill may not face proper scrutiny.

Tom Watson, MP for West Bromwich East, suggested the timing of the forthcoming general election may result in several controversial proposals being passed despite the concerns of his constituents.

He was speaking at the Stop Disconnection demo, which took place on Wednesday (March 24th) outside the Houses of Parliament.

Protesters were expressing their concern about proposals to censor or block internet users in violation of the bill - something they say could bring about the end of open use internet facilities in public places.

Wireless networks are used by many media professionals when working away from the office.

Mr Watson said: "There are plenty of other measures that can be discussed, but the point is we are not going to have time to discuss the alternatives."
