One professional working in a charity job has suggested that older drivers would value the opportunity to take a refresher course.
Neil Greig, Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) director of policy and research, said those who passed their test some time ago might feel more confident if they brushed up on their skills.
"The IAM does not support compulsory testing or medicals ... Updating [older people's] skills ... and helping them to stay mobile for as long as possible should be the key aim of refresher courses," he continued.
A study by the organisation found that 84 per cent of car owners aged 70 or older "acknowledge the value" of such an experience.
Mr Greig went on to say doctors should be provided with information on how to advise patients on when to give up driving or take another refresher.
What's more, people who participate in the scheme often receive lower car insurance premiums as a result, the IAM claims.
