Offshore wind industry could create 70,000 green jobs-Green recruitment News
08 Jan 2010
The offshore wind industry could be worth £75 billion, creating up to 70,000 green jobs by 2020, the prime minister predicted today (January 8th).
Gordon Brown was announcing the approval of new rights granted to nine coastal areas, which could potentially see 6,400 wind turbines in the UK generating up to 32 gigawatts of wind energy.
Previous rounds of funding have seen only eight gigawatts granted whereas the government says the new approved amount is enough to power almost every house in the nation.
Mr Brown claimed the UK was "ahead of every other country in the world" while secretary for energy and climate change Ed Miliband said he hoped the news would secure more green jobs.
"Our island has one of the best wind energy resources in Europe and today's news shows that there's a huge appetite for capacity to be built here," he added.
The European Union hopes to source one-fifth of the continent's energy from renewable units in the next decade.
