New skills academy to create hundred of arts jobs-Arts jobs News
17 Mar 2010
Hundreds of arts jobs could be created after the government launched plans for a £13 million skills academy.
Thames Gateway minister Shahid Malik announced today (March 17th) the new facility will train thousands of people in the theatre industry.
Entitled the National Skills Academy for Creative & Cultural Skills, the state of the art facility will be set within the Royal Opera House Production Park in Thurrock and provide training led by industry professionals, as well as offering apprenticeships for the creative sector.
Prime minister Gordon Brown said: "It will help to support the recovery and will also contribute to the development of a cultural legacy from the London 2012 Olympic Games, helping to raise aspirations for young people throughout the UK."
The new centre will address the need for an estimated 30,000 skilled workers in the theatre and arts sector by 2017 and the emphasis will be on professional accreditation.
Arts and humanities funding in Scottish universities is higher than south of the border, helping to ensure the long term survival of under-threat areas, according to the Edinburgh Journal.
