An expert working in a charity job has suggested that people suffering from diabetes take solace from new research.
A report from the University of Leeds claims scientists have discovered a new gene which could help prevent heart disease in relevant groups.
Jenny Hirst, co-chair of the Insulin Dependent Diabetes Trust, said: "We are very interested in the results ... these problems are such a worry to people with [the condition] and their families."
She added that sufferers should take "real hope" from the findings and that while such discoveries are received well, further options should still be explored.
Researchers were inspired to conduct the experiments after realising insulin can cause blood vessels to swell making it more difficult for the heart to pump them around the body.
This activity was halted when patients were treated with the new molecule - the experts think this result could completely change the way the deficiency is treated.
