The number of charity jobs in Reading could be increased if a new communication project is given the go-ahead, according to one expert.
Elderly people will be able to chat in groups on the telephone using technology already available, said Pat Fitzsimons, chief executive of Community Network - a provider of tele-conferences for different UK organisations.
She added: "Everybody has a phone in their house, it's completely accessible to anybody."
Those taking part in the initiative will dial a number at a designated time to reach seven other people simultaneously to make sure they are all enjoying enough social activities.
Employment opportunities will be made available as each conversation is moderated by a facilitator.
A training programme has been devised and they will moderate the calls and suggest specialist help if they think it is required.
Talking to other people can help combat depression in older people, according to Denise Murphy from the charity CSV.
