Measures to help those with multiple sclerosis (MS) could include the pursuit of rewarding charity careers, judging by an expert's comments.
Dave Farham, service user manager for the MS Research and Relief Fund, noted that extra efforts need to be made in order to improve the experience of patients with the condition.
He said: "I think there needs to be a much higher focus on helping people cope with MS. Whilst health and care trusts do offer support, a great deal is also left to charities such as ours."
Mr Farham went on to suggest that although obesity has been put forward as one possible cause of MS, it is too simplistic to label it as a direct link.
That said, he observed that greater concentrations of the medical problem appear further north in the UK, with high levels in Scotland and the Shetland Isles.
According to figures from the MS Society, 100,000 people in the UK have the condition, with 50 new sufferers each week.
