More care jobs in hospitals could be created if advice from the Patients Association is taken on board. A study from the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) revealed that junior doctors are being put in charge of entire wards at night and some staff are left to care for up to 400 individuals at a time. Katherine Murphy, director of the Patients Association, said the lack of professionals available overnight is "disturbing" - likening the practice to allowing a trainee pilot control an aircraft. Checking and publishing nurse to patient ratios could help people decide whether their nearest hospital is of an adequate standard, according to Ms Murphy. "This is further evidence that serious work needs to be done to ensure that the NHS provides a safe service 24/7," she concluded. Employment opportunities could be opened up if issues raised by the RCP are tackled.
