Housing officer praises London social property plans

A housing officer has welcomed the mayor of London's proposal to allow boroughs within the capital to have more control over their own budgets for the construction of new residential properties.

Boris Johnson recently outlined plans to revamp the current system in a report entitled A Framework for Devolved Delivery which would entitle individual councils to be at the forefront of negotiations with developers and therefore provide them with more responsibility to meet the needs of their communities.

Mr Johnson commented that this plan is intended to "unlock London's housing potential" by delivering more social properties in order to cut the level of overcrowding currently seen in the capital.

And Dino Patel, London regional manager at the National Housing Federation, came out in full support of the measure.

"Any initiative which leads to the building of more affordable housing is to be welcome," he said.
