Housing officer jobs ''depend on rate of supply''-Housing jobs News 26 Oct 2009

Housing officer jobs depend on rate of supply

People keen to pursue a career as a social housing officer may agree with the comments of an expert, who suggested there could be a prolonged shortage of such accommodation.

Despite the release of statistics that showed the rate of home building has risen, Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders, suggested that many people will struggle to gain access to social housing.

He said: "The fact still remains that there will be around five million people waiting for social housing by next year."

Furthermore, Mr Berry pointed to figures from the government's housing adviser that claimed the country needs 237,000 new homes each year before 2031.

He went on to say: "The problem has reached such massive proportions because successive governments have failed to properly address the supply issue."

The comments follow research by the National House-Building Council that revealed there were 24,136 applications to build new homes in the third quarter of 2009 - a rise of four per cent compared with the previous quarter.
