Housing jobs news: Work continues to catch cheats

Professionals working in housing jobs across the UK are set to be given fresh powers to clamp down on tenancy cheats, it has been announced.

Aimed at addressing the problem of cheats, who make money through illegally subletting out their social housing properties at higher rental rates, the government's housing minister John Healey has outlined his plans to make such fraud a criminal offence.

Under the newly-announced proposal, anyone caught cheating the system in such a way could stand to lose their home, with those working in housing jobs also given the power to keep them off social housing lists in the future.

Passing on 27,000 new leads to potential tenancy cheats compiled by the Audit Commission to local authorities across the country, Mr Healey stated that this new clampdown will help show people that the social housing system is fair.

He said: "Councils have made a good start but I want to see them step up pressure on profiteering from council homes."

In addition to housing, Mr Healey is also responsible for issues regarding climate change and sustainable development.
