People working in health care jobs in the UK are to see mephedrone and its related compounds reclassified as Class B drugs. Acting on the back of recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), the home secretary Alan Johnson has confirmed that the government is to take the immediate step of controlling the availability of mephedrone. Under the newly-announced plans, any incoming shipments of the drug are to be seized and destroyed by Border Agency officials, while steps will be taken to inform shopkeepers and chemists of the imminent rule changes. Announcing the news, Mr Johnson explained the action is being taken on the advice of those working in health care jobs and comes on the back of a number of high profile cases showing the drug's effects. "Mephedrone and its related substances have been shown to be dangerous and harmful, but it is right we waited for full scientific advice so we can take action that stops organised criminals and dealers tweaking substances to get around the law," he said. Back in November, Mr Johnson gave his support to government plans to abolish NHS prescription charges for everyone undergoing treatment for cancer or for the effects of the disease.
