The housing minister has said a new social homes initiative proves the government is fulfilling its promise to create housing jobs.

John Healey made his comments as he announced the start of the biggest council housing construction project in the decades.

Part of the £141 million government funding scheme, £500,000 backed the creation of 15 new homes in Hebburn, Tyneside.

Mr Healey confirmed the drive is set to create up to 5,000 jobs as he announced more sites will begin developing soon.

"Alongside the extra leeway I am giving councils to manage their waiting lists according to local pressures, the new building started today will help councils tackle the housing needs of their communities," he concluded.

The funding is one facet of the government's Housing Pledge.

According to its website, the Pledge promises extra funding to Housing Associations and councils, in order to create approximately 45,000 construction jobs.

It is also responsible for the Kickstart programme, which gives necessary cash injections to stalled housing projects.
