Green jobs need better government backing

Green jobs can be created by increased government backing for "clean energy cashback", the Micropower Council have said.

Grace Bennet, head of policy and communications at the organisation, made her comments after a survey carried out by the Renewable Energy Association, Friends of the Earth and the Cooperative found that the majority (71 per cent) of consumers would install green energy in their homes if given a big enough cash incentive.

The government is expected to unveil a scheme along these lines in the next few days - but the groups which undertook the research say it is not big enough, as it aspires to provide two per cent of UK energy.

Ms Bennet said the government were "obliged" to back the scheme with more money if they wanted better support for environmental energy.

"De-centralised low carbon can play a significant role in reducing energy bills, cutting carbon emissions and creating green collar jobs," she added.
