Green jobs in focus as scrappage scheme ends-Green recruitment News
31 Mar 2010
The government's car scrappage scheme has helped to support thousands of automotive industry positions, including a significant number of green jobs, it has been stated.
Released as the initiative comes to an end, the latest official figures show that around one in five new car registrations recorded over the past ten months came as a result of consumers being able to benefit from a £2,000 for scrapping their old vehicle.
Notably, showing the extend to which the initiative has helped to support green jobs in the UK manufacturing sector, cars acquired through the scheme had average carbon dioxide emissions around 27 per cent lower than the vehicles they were replacing.
Commenting on the success of the scheme, which has been replicated in numerous European countries, business secretary Lord Mandelson expressed his pleasure that it manage to deliver the results both the government and car-makers had hoped for.
"The figures show that this scheme gave vital support, boosting demand when the industry needed it most, helping to position the auto sector to meet the challenges of building a strong low-carbon future," he said.
Due to the success of the scheme, the government extended it until March 2010, ploughing a further £100 million into the initiative back in September.
