Green jobs expert: Government could face legal battle if it cuts energy tariffs

A green jobs expert has warned that the government may have a legal battle on its hands if it cuts renewable energy tariffs paid to certain parties in its comprehensive spending review tomorrow (October 20th).

According to Craig Bennett, policy and campaigns director at Friends of the Earth, any alteration in the amount of cash currently awarded to businesses, schools, homes and communities to help them generate small-scale green energy could lead to the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance finding itself in court.

Mr Bennett said that these parties have "planned and invested accordingly" following the government's decision to clearly outline tariff levels for the first three years of the scheme.

"Reviewing tariff rates could undermine these plans," he added.

These comments come after the charity group sent a letter to Greg Barker - energy minister and MP for Bexhill and Battle - urging him not to allow his government to change the funding in this area.
