Green jobs: Technology could transform motorways

Those looking to find green jobs may be inspired by innovative new technologies that could change the face of British motorways.

Neil Wallis, head of communications for the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, gave his reaction to news that vehicles may one day be able to drive themselves.

Commenting on the EU road train project, he welcomed the developments and added: "Our mission is to accelerate the reduction in carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions from transport."

Mr Wallis went on to underline the importance of a shift in cultural attitudes towards energy-saving.

"We need to see technology change but we need to see people changing their behaviour."

The Ricardo-led project called SATRE (safe road trains for the environment) would provide motors with a navigation system that would enable them follow a lead vehicle in convoy through a transmitter.

With organisers hoping to begin the first tests in 2011, it is hoped the scheme could reduce drag and save energy by 20 per cent.
