Government ''must introduce more housing jobs apprenticeships'' -Housing News 28 Sep 2010

Young people seeking housing jobs opportunities should be given a helping hand by the government through the creation of more apprenticeships in the industry, an expert has said.

According to Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation (HBF), the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance should work alongside companies and organisations in the construction sector to help facilitate schemes to bring through the next generation of housing jobs workers.

"If the government is serious about increasing housing supply, we have got to ensure that we have got the skills required in the future to do that," he remarked.

Mr Turner was commenting following a speech given last week (September 23rd) by Beatrice Orchard, coordinator at the Cross-industry Construction Apprenticeship Task Force, who said that the housing jobs sector is facing a potential skills gap due to the limited availability of apprenticeships.

And the HBF official concluded that "a skilled workforce" is essential if the government is to fulfil its "very challenging agenda" on residential properties.
