The government has identified Yorkshire and Humber as the centre of the UK's carbon capture and storage (CCS) industry.Energy and climate secretary Ed Miliband unveiled the CCS Industrial Strategy, which identified the region as prime for an acceleration in green jobs and awarded £6.3 million for the development of a carbon capture project in Ferrybridge.Mr Miliband specifically claimed that Yorkshire is well placed to reap the benefits from the jobs the investment in CCS will bring, while the UK economy as a whole will also receive around £6.5 billion annually.Rosie Winter, minister for Yorkshire and the Humber, described this announcement as an "important day for the economy of Yorkshire and the Humber".She said: "Both these announcements position Yorkshire and the Humber as a world leader in the development and production of the type of energy needed in a low carbon economy and will mean more jobs and further investment in our region."CCS technology prevents the build up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by capturing and storing underground emissions released by energy production facilities.
