Government grants could boost green jobs

New green jobs could be created after the government announced a series of grants to aid the roll out of smart technology.

Eight companies will benefit from the investment, which will help to place a smart meter in every home, build a smart grid and will bring closer the prospect of a smart city.

The funds - totalling £7.6 million - will be provided by the Department of Energy and Climate Change and recipients include Scottish Hydro Electric Power, National Grid and Smart Grid Solutions.

Energy minister Lord Hunt said: "Globally the business of developing smart grids has been estimated at £27 billion over the next five years and the UK has the know-how to be part of that."

He added the new technology is aimed at managing a low-carbon switch to renewable energy sources such as wind and nuclear power.

Earlier this week environment secretary Hilary Benn announced plans to help businesses turn their food and farm waste into useable energy.
