The first female to step into the president's role in her professional membership job has taken up her post at BECTU.

Christine Bond will reside for the 2010-12 term and said she is "surprised and happy".

Speaking about the challenges ahead, Ms Bond added: "Tough times are not necessarily bad times; in tough times we always work better if we work together. Let's get out there and keep going."

After gaining experience with the organisation for the last 18 years, the activist has also worked at NEC and branch levels of the union and has been a freelance photographer in the past.

The exiting president, Tony Lennon, did not stand in the most recent election after he retired from his post at the BBC.

In other news from the union, professionals are encouraged to attend the Freelancers' Fair which takes place on June 11th at Savoy Place in London.
