Facebook vital to media and arts jobs

With much of the buzz in the arts and media sectors currently surrounding social networking sites, it emerged this week that Facebook is now the most visited online site in the US.

Comparing figures from the same week last year, Experian Hitwise results indicate Facebook's market share increased by 185 per cent while Google showed a gain of just nine per cent.

With a share of internet traffic at 7.07 per cent, the website has now surpassed search engine Google at the top of the rankings.

This demonstrates the potential power of social media to marketers, according to Niall O'Malley, group account director at Immediate Future.

"I'd say it [social networking] will be a cornerstone for every marketing strategy that we devise over the next decade. It's fundamental. And that's because of the changing nature of the way we use the internet," he said.

Facebook use via mobile phones also increased 112 per cent since the same week in 2009, indicating the potential for marketers to tap into the mobile sector of social networking.
