Environmental jobs news: Boiler scrappage scheme reaches target

Environmental job seekers may be encouraged to learn the government's boiler scrappage scheme has reached its target just three months after it was launched.

Launched in January 2010, the boiler scrappage scheme aimed to upgrade the boilers in 125,000 UK homes using £50 million of government funding.

Part of the package to improve UK household's energy efficiency and help homeowners reduce their fuel bills, the government offered homeowners the chance to claim up to £400 off a new A-rated boiler when trading in their old one.

People with vouchers now have 12 weeks to benefit from the scheme.

Data published on March 16th showed 118,785 vouchers had been issued and 35,390 boilers installed.

Minister for energy, Lord Hunt, said: "The scheme has been a great success and is already helping people to cut down their fuel bills. A new A-rated boiler can help save around £200 a year."

Completion of the scheme came just a day ahead of Earth Hour, a WWF scheme supported by the Department of Energy and Climate Change encouraging people to turn off their lights for one hour on Saturday March 27th at 20:30 BST.
