Environmental jobs may soon include new green ratings

Environmental jobs may soon include duties related to the "green rating" system proposed recently by housing and planning minister John Healey.

He wants to simplify the Code for Sustainable Homes, which was first introduced in 2007 and applied star ratings from one to six based on how well a property performs in terms of waste and energy use.

The aim of the latest proposals is to help consumers save more money on their utility bills and "green-proof" houses for the future.

In addition, the new rules regarding building regulations and energy efficiency will be taken into account.

Despite wanting to make changes to the code, Mr Healey emphasised its success thus far.

"Now is the time to make it a more user-friendly standard for consumers," he said.

"This will help drive uptake so people will save more money on bills and reduce the carbon footprint of new homes."

His comments came on the same day as US president Barack Obama arrived in Copenhagen for the climate change summit, which ends today (December 18th).
