Environmental careers can boost energy efficiency in housing

People who build environmental careers can help boost the amount of energy-efficient housing options, an expert has suggested.

Charlotte Webster, head of public relations at Solarcentury, responded to news that utilising power from the sun could become more affordable for the average homeowner.

She said: "Energy efficiency in the building is the first thing that needs to be addressed."

Regarding the notion that such energy-saving techniques require aesthetically dubious products, Ms Webster recommended "solar electric roof tiles that integrate straight into the roof and replace traditional roof tiles".

However, consumers themselves need to ensure they remain environmentally-conscious in their actions - otherwise solar power cannot be fully effective.

The remarks follow recent research at Georgia Tech University, which found that solar power could become cheaper if optical fibres are developed.

Recently, the government estimated that 32 per cent of the UK's electricity should be based on renewable sources in order to meet European Union targets.
