Community regeneration jobs to expand Post Office financial services-Housing recruitment News
29 Mar 2010
Regeneration jobs could receive a boost as the government announces plans to increase financial services offered by the Post Office.
Still in his first year as business secretary, Lord Mandelson hopes that expanding the financial services available at branches of the Post Office will help to put banking "back in the heart of the community".
With plans to pump £180 million into the Post Office in 2011-12 to sustain the current 11,500 branches of the Post Office, putting pay to any rumours of further Post Office closures, community regeneration jobs could see the fruit of Lord Mandelson's proposals.
He believes the new policy will help to build a fairer and more trusted financial system. Under the proposals, the Post Office will now offer weekly budgeting accounts to help people on low incomes make the most of their money and keep on top of their bills.
In addition, a new Child Savings Account will be developed. There are also talks with Santander and RBS to allow their customers to access their bank accounts at their local Post Office.
