Clean coal could provide green jobs

Green jobs may become readily available, following proposals to build the UK's first clean coal power station.

The European Commission has pledged to put forward £165 million of funding for the scheme at Hatfield in Yorkshire.

Carbon capture and storage technology will be implemented at the new 900-megawatt plant, which could boost the green jobs market.

Yorkshire MEP Diana Wallis welcomed the news, adding: "This announcement should be welcomed as great news for the region's economy and for combating global climate change.

She went on to say that the development will put the region "squarely on the map as an important centre for this increasingly important technology".

By drawing upon innovative environmental expertise, the power station is expected to be able to limit the effects of fossil fuel emissions by storing carbon safely away from the atmosphere.

The total cost of the plant will be £2.4 billion, and will also be funded by the government.
