Charity jobs and the help these provide for the elderly make a difference to people's lives - and this was highlighted recently by a donation campaign.
More than 900 accessories and clothes were given by government staff as part of the Donate Don't Dump scheme, which aims to increase the quality of things handed into charity stores.
It also wanted to encourage more people to give unwanted products to such retailers, as they rely on such donations to keep going.
Some of the clothes collected by the Association of Charity Shops included a dress from Sarah Brown and a tie from prime minister Gordon Brown.
Hugh Forde is managing director of retail, training and trading at Age Concern and Help the Aged, which received the goods.
In his opinion, good quality donations are "vital … so that we can continue to make a real difference to the lives of older people".
A report from Age Concern on its 2007-8 progress said it was pressing the government for a "more joined-up approach" in the light of a global economic slowdown.
