Charity jobs comment on DCSF change

A charity CEO has warned that the rebranding of the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF) to the Department for Education (DFE) may not provide the services needed to help abused children.

Terina Keene, chief executive for UK charity Railway Children, has claimed the coalition government's intention to replace the DCSF with the DFE marks a move away from prevention and early intervention for children caught in homelessness or abusive home lives.

She said: "The link between substance abuse, prostitution, poor mental health, antisocial behaviour and low educational attainment is well documented. Focusing on education alone will not help this invisible group of children break this toxic chain of harm."

Others in charity jobs criticised the DCSF change, which could remove much of the work of the previous Labour government, calling it a "big mistake" to disband the department, Children and Young People Now reports.

The new Department for Education sees MP Michael Gove become education secretary with MP Nick Gibb as schools' minister and MP Sarah Teather as children's and families' minister.
