In order to get young people to choose healthier eating and fitness habits, more individuals could pursue charity careers to promote this idea.
Joanne Butcher, assistant director of health, wellbeing and environment at the National Children's Bureau, outlined the ways in which positive lifestyle choices are vital for anyone's development.
She said: "Not only does regular physical activity promote good physical health but also it helps children and young people feel good, supports their development and enables them to learn about relationships."
In this way, people who get involved in health careers or charity work should feel confident about their ability to make a difference.
Additionally, the expert highlighted the need for local authorities to involve children in matters of decision making - such as the provision of public spaces and community facilities.
Meanwhile, a recent study by the British Heart Foundation revealed that many parents are unaware that their children are not doing the necessary amount of exercise.
For instance, 71 per cent of survey respondents claimed that their offspring are active enough, whereas in reality only 11 per cent of these youngsters are involved in the advised 60 minutes of daily activity.
