Premature babies undergoing surgery are more sensitive to pain, so professionals in care jobs need to manage the situation effectively, according to an expert.

Sarah Montagu, admin secretary for the Association of Radical Midwives, said administering more pain killers is not the way to help the little ones cope.

"You have to think of ways that you can ameliorate the pain without compromising the baby ... that's quite a difficult balance," she advised.

Isolation can also be a problem as some children have shown improvements in their health if they are touched or held more often, Ms Montagu claimed.

Kangaroo Care - where the mother carries her offspring on her chest - can be good for babies that only need nasal oxygen, but for those requiring additional care or medication it is not always possible.

These comments come in response to a report from the University College London which suggested infants in intensive care have a more intense reaction to painful procedures than their healthy counterparts.
