Care jobs could include checking on elderly neighbours

Looking after the elderly isn't just for those in care jobs - everyone is being urged to check on their elderly neighbours this winter.

Studies have revealed that more than half of those over 75 live alone with nearly 50 per cent of all older people considering the television their main form of company.

In light of this, care services minister Phil Hope has encouraged everyone to pop in and visit elderly friends or relatives, whether to help them with their shopping or just to have a cup of tea.

Chief executive of Volunteering UK Justin Davis Smith said opportunities to help ranged from dropping in on older, isolated neighbours to more formal schemes.

"You can volunteer informally by visiting an elderly friend or neighbour or if you dont know anyone, you could choose to [do it] through a befriending project in your local area," he added.

Meanwhile, the government has revealed there will be 12,000 people in the UK aged over 100 next year a figure that is expected to almost double to 22,000 in a decade.
