Biomass project to create 40 green energy jobs

A new biomass-fuelled power plant is to be built in Avonmouth with the creation of 40 full-time positions.

The plans were announced by the Department of Energy and Climate Change and will also see the creation of 250 jobs during the construction process.

Helius Energy has been confirmed as the company chosen by the government to administer the 100 megawatt plant at Bristol Port.

David Kidney, parliamentary undersecretary for energy and climate change, said: "This plant will generate enough electricity to power up to 200,000 homes - making a significant contribution to our CO2 emissions reduction and energy security goals."

Helius Energy specialises in alternative fuels and has expressed a desire to move the sector towards reliable biofuels and away from a reliance on coal and oil.

Last year, the firm secured first option on the 18-acre Avonmouth dock site, along with nearby land for a construction compound.

Following that agreement on October 10th, the firm undertook a consultation process before deciding to proceed.
