Arts jobs news: BBC Four name change discussed

The BBC should consider re-branding the BBC Four digital TV channel, some of the leading experts in arts jobs in the UK have argued.

Citing the success of Sky Arts, a number of media industry experts have told the Guardian that similarly renaming the corporation's channel as BBC Arts could both boost viewer numbers and help it to focus on its original broadcasting commitments.

Among those arts jobs holders lendng their support to the idea is the former arts controller for Channel Five, Kim Peat, who has told the newspaper that her professional experience has helped her appreciate the strong levels of viewer demand for "intelligent" programming.

"Wouldn't BBC Arts be a fantastic idea!" she said.

"Television audiences for arts are always very hungry for more, as I found when at Five when I commissioned Tim Marlow to make programmes explaining the great exhibitions."

At the same time, however, the general secretary of the Writers' Guild of Great Britain, Bernie Corbett, has noted that rebranding BBC Four could serve to "ghettoise" the channel and limit its audience appeal.

In addition to arts and culture documentaries, BBC Four also shows the hit US drama series Mad Men.
