Traditionally, arts jobs are known for being based on who-you-know culture, with hopefuls working for nothing to break into the industry.
Industry body Skillset, which aims to help people gain arts and creative media jobs, providing support and training, has issued a set of guidelines for arts employers.
Working closely with the Arts Council England and Creative and Cultural Skills, Skillset has produced the Guidelines for Employers offering Work Placement schemes in the Creative Industries.
Forty-four per cent of people now working in the creative industry say they started out in unpaid work placements.
The guidelines set out law and employment duties for creative industry businesses concerning employment of those over the age of 19.
Covering jobs in TV, film, radio, interactive media, animation, computer games, facilities, photo imaging and publishing the guidelines recommend limiting work placements to no more than 160 hours, covering expenses and limiting the working week to 40 hours. The document also includes recommendation of paying those on graduate internships national minimum wage.
