Arts jobs could be saved in Aberdeen-Arts jobs News
31 Mar 2010
Arts jobs seekers in Aberdeen have been given a boost by the news that a proposed new arts centre in the city has been handed a major funding lifeline.
The Aberdeen Press and Journal reports that Peacock Visual Arts has already made public its plans to establish a new state-of-the-art base in the heart of the Scottish city as part of a mooted multimillion-pound redevelopment of the Union Terrace Gardens.
While the centre will still face competition for its plans from a group led by Sir Ian Wood, who wants to see the gardens transformed into a new public square, Peacock has now been given a boost with the news that the Scottish Arts Council has extended its deadline for it to apply for a £4.3 million grant for its proposed work.
As a result, the arts centre can go into an upcoming public consultation with a possible funding source in place, alongside its plans to boost Aberdeen's cultural scene and arts jobs prospects.
Peacock campaign director Elly Rothnie told the newspaper: "Welcoming the news, it would have been devastating if we had lost this funding before the result of the public consultation was issued and there was clarity over the future of Union Terrace Gardens."
In February, a number of communities across projects won a share of £800,000 National lottery funding for various arts projects.
