The UK is facing a property crisis in that affordable housing options are desperately lacking, a fact that has been largely ignored by the new prime minister, the director of communications, policy and campaigns for a homelessness charity has observed.

Kay Boycott of Shelter responded to David Cameron's statement that council houses should not be for provided life by saying, while it is imperative the Conservatives consider how to combat the issue, the bigger question is not "security of tenure".

"[This] cost local authorities huge amounts of money to implement, creating an army of bureaucrats to undertake these reviews, leaving us no better off and our most vulnerable members of society at risk," she remarked.

In addition, Ms Boycott noted that recent predictions have indicated that housing delivery could drop below 100,000 in 2011 for the first time since 1923 and in order to justify Mr Cameron's proposals, a consultation must reveal without a doubt that those in housing need would significantly benefit.

Towards the end of last month, Shelter's Campbell Robb warned the government that funding would need to be protected in order to avoid a massive climb in homelessness.
